Bringing your experiences into a clearer picture

A psychological assessment is a focused process for understanding emotional or psychological difficulties and how they affect your life.

It brings together your current concerns, relevant history, relationships, ways of coping, strengths and goals. This can be particularly helpful when difficulties overlap, previous support has not provided enough clarity or you are uncertain about the next step.

Rather than considering each symptom separately, we look at how different parts of your experience may connect. This helps us develop what psychologists call a formulation, a clear, individual explanation of what may have contributed to your difficulties, what may be keeping them going and what could help.

The assessment is structured around you and does not rely on a checklist alone.

A calm adult psychological assessment conversation

What the assessment considers

The conversation will be guided by what has brought you to the clinic and what you would like to understand.

Depending on your circumstances, we may consider:

  • Your current emotional or psychological difficulties
  • How these affect your daily life, work and relationships
  • Relevant experiences from your past
  • Important changes or events in your life
  • Patterns in your thoughts, feelings and responses
  • The ways you have learned to cope
  • Your strengths, values and sources of support
  • What you would like to be different

You remain involved throughout. You can ask questions, request a break or tell us if something feels difficult to discuss.

What to expect

01

Step 1: Make an enquiry

Tell us briefly what you would like help with or what you hope to understand.

You do not need to know which type of assessment or support you need.

02

Step 2: Arrange your appointment

We will explain the assessment process, agree on the appointment length and format, confirm the fee and discuss any adjustments you may need.

If questionnaires would be helpful, we will send these to you before the appointment.

03

Step 3: Invoice and payment

Your invoice will be sent by email once the appointment has been arranged.

Payment must be made by bank transfer at least 48 hours before the assessment.

04

Step 4: Attend the assessment

The assessment is a structured conversation exploring your current experiences, relevant history, strengths, ways of coping and hopes for the future.

You can ask questions, pause or request a break at any point.

05

Step 5: Develop a shared understanding

We will bring the information together and consider how the different parts of your experience may be connected.

This shared understanding, or formulation, can help explain why certain difficulties developed, what may be keeping them going and what could support change.

06

Step 6: Report and recommendations

You will receive a copy of your written report, including your formulation and personalised recommendations.

Recommendations may include therapy, practical strategies, further assessment or another type of support. There is no obligation to arrange further appointments with us.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers about formulation, diagnosis, payment and cancellations.

No. An assessment is a focused process designed to help you understand what you are experiencing and consider what may help.

Therapy usually involves working towards agreed goals over a series of appointments.

For some people, the assessment itself provides what they need. Having a clear formulation, an explanation that helps their experiences make sense, may offer enough understanding to move forward independently. If that feels sufficient for you, that is completely valid.

Other people decide that they would like further support and use the assessment recommendations to guide their choice of therapy.

There is no expectation or obligation to begin therapy following an assessment.

A general psychological assessment is primarily intended to develop an individual understanding of your experiences and provide recommendations. It does not automatically result in a formal diagnosis.

If you are seeking a specific diagnostic assessment, such as an ADHD or autism assessment, please mention this in your enquiry. We can then explain the appropriate assessment route.

An invoice will be emailed to you after your appointment has been arranged.

Payment must be made by bank transfer at least 48 hours before the assessment

If you are running late, please let us know as soon as possible. Your appointment will normally still finish at the agreed time. If there is not enough time to complete the assessment safely and thoroughly, it may need to be rearranged and an additional fee may apply.

If you need to cancel or rearrange, please provide at least 48 hours’ notice. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours’ notice and appointments you do not attend may be charged at the full appointment fee.

We understand that unexpected circumstances can arise and will consider exceptional situations individually and with compassion.
